Bake While You Can

By Marion Wilkinson

Do your children look forward to having that dessert after dinner? How about your husband and yourself for that matter? Making those homemade goodies takes time, something you may be short on in your daily life.

Autumn is a great time to bake because it's cooler and a lot of the activities that kept you busy over the summer, are now long gone. Nothing smells better than a house filled with the aroma of fresh baked goodies. Having homemade baked goods in the house is a welcome treat for the whole family.

The holidays are rapidly approaching and with them come out of town guests, parties and family get gatherings. If you start your baking soon, there will be a freezer full of special treats for all. Properly storing your desserts in the freezer is easy.

It is best to stick with recipes that aren't too involved if you are making them ahead of time. Making those cheesecakes that everyone loves is a very time consuming process but well worth the effort. Pick out your favorite cheesecake recipe and make one or two and freeze them. Be sure to store them tightly wrapped in foil. I take it one step further and put my cakes in an extra large zipper bag before I freeze them.

Breads are another option for pre-holiday baking. Mix up and bake some of your favorites like pumpkin bread, banana bread or even corn bread. These freeze well and are a welcome addition to breakfast for your overnight guests. You can also make these bread recipes into muffins and freeze them individually, taking out only what you need each time.

Be sure to start watching the supermarket ads for sales on your baking supplies. Spreading the cost out over a few weeks really helps with your grocery budget. Look for coupons in magazines and online to help defray the costs. A lot of stores will offer specials around this time of the year, just keep an eye out for them.

It doesn't take a lot of effort to bake, if you're prepared. Making that list of what you want to make and a list of all the ingredients, simplifies the entire process. Most importantly, have fun while your baking. - 29885

3 Creative Desserts

By Katie Rogers

Desserts are one of those lovable guilty pleasures. The sweetness of a nice dessert after a good meal is about as good as anything you could want to eat, especially if it's prepared right.

Whether it's a hot cake or some cold ice cream, there are so many desserts in this world to enjoy. I know that I've had my share of them, but here are a few that I've just recently tried.

I'm going to help you out by giving you a few suggestions that I believe will appeal to you. Take a look at these, and look online for different ways to make these, as I know there are a ton of them.

The first dessert that I'll recommend is a mousse, but a white chocolate one at that. I'm sure you've had the traditional rich chocolate mousse with dark chocolate shavings, but going white is a great way to mix it up.

Mix in some raspberry drizzle and you've got yourself a real winner. In fact, just about any toppings will go well. Dark chocolate, hot fudge, actual raspberries, caramel, and many more things.

A second dessert dish that goes over really well at parties is the ice cream martini. You're basically serving ice cream inside a martini glass, which looks much more appealing than ice cream in a cup or a bowl.

Have some fun with it and throw in some trimmings so that you have a sundae in a martini glass. Your guests will love the added touch that the martini glass brings, not to mention the taste of the dessert.

The third dessert suggestion is another creative play on something more traditional. It's easier to make a mango into the shape of a rose, and there's no doubt in my mind that you should be able to do this.

The ice cream makes for a great touch to this dessert, though you could go with sorbet if you prefer something a little less creamy. - 29885
